Welcome To The Save More Than Food Newsletter

This is the perfect time to consider ways that all of us can be working toward sustainability for the new year, and SWACO can help. If you’re like most of us, you’ve probably found yourself staring into the fridge at that wilted lettuce or forgotten leftovers and felt a pang of guilt. Maybe you even know that a million pounds of food waste comes to the Franklin County landfill every day but aren’t sure what you can do to help. There’s good news, though. Small changes in how we shop, store, and cook our food can make a big difference in how much we waste, which is great not only for the planet but also for our wallets.

This newsletter will be your friendly guide to practical tips, creative recipes, and clever hacks that will help you waste less and savor more. Let’s kick off the new year by transforming those good intentions into delicious action.

Fresh Takes Tip: Shop Your Refrigerator & Freezer First

This winter, commit to looking first at what you already have on-hand before going to the store. Tired of eating the soup you made a few days ago? Freeze the leftovers in a reusable container to enjoy later, and don’t forget to label and date it. Click here for more information about how freezing meals can save you time, money, and food.

Did You Know?

Fourteen percent of what comes to the landfill every day is food waste, adding up to a million pounds each day. That takes up a lot of space in the landfill and reduces its useful life but it also affects our families’ budgets, and for a family of four, it could add up to as much as $2,000 per year in waste. Visit SaveMoreThanFood.org to learn more about food waste prevention, food donation, and composting what’s left.
